About RoSPA

Road Safety Promotion Australia (RoSPA) is a non-profit road safety and traffic awareness and education organisation geared toward road safety in Rural and Regional Victoria.

As part of the commitment to reducing road trauma that impacts rural and regional communities, ROSPA has collaborated with students from Deakin University’s Freelancing Hub to find a new approach to road safety. The second HUB report was presented in June 2020 (see media release)

RoSPA is contributing to reducing deaths and serious injuries on Victorian roads, with the development of innovative road safety and traffic awareness campaigns to assist driver and passenger behaviour and driver hazard perception assistance when travelling on 2nd and 3rd class rated rural roads.

ROSPA is working with the CHARTSEC – Charlton Secondary College Year 9 and 10 Pre- Driver Education program, with a view to promoting greater use of this facility and to others being established in Victoria.

Our Mission

RAISE AWARENESS

Engage with communities in regional, rural and remote areas to promote road safety awareness and enforce safe behaviours on our roads

PROMOTE ROAD SAFETY

Promote the prevention of road trauma through innovative road safety awareness programs, driver education, research and community engagement.

EDUCATION

Reduce the number of young people involved in fatal crashes and serious road trauma that impacts rural and regional communities through education programs for prevention of future road accidents.

Research studies

Research studies on international road safety performance and practices carried out by the world’s leading countries in road safety and how they compare with Australia was the initial driving force behind the development of ROSPA.

Despite the reduction in deaths on our roads over the past 30 years, Australia’s 2011 road deaths per 100,00 population was 5.6

Norway 3.4 and United Kingdom 3.10 *

The approaches adopted by the best-performing countries serving as a foundation for developing programs and projects for promoting road safety education and awareness, ROSPA working with Community Groups as in Norway and the UK towards a future with fewer road deaths and trauma in Victoria.

*International Road Safety Comparisons – BITRE

In 2019:

The UK recorded 1,752 road deaths with a population of 66.8 million.

Australia recorded 1,195 road deaths with a population of 25.3 million.

Victoria recorded 266 road deaths with a population of 5.5 million.

Norway recorded 108 road deaths with a population of 4.9 million.

Norway was listed by the European Transport Safety Council (https://etsc.eu/) as the:   ‘Best in the world in road safety’.

With Norway as the model for ROSPA, programs and projects at community level, as in Norway, will be introduced as follows:

  • Local accident prevention
  • Speed
  • Seat belt use and proper securing of children
  • Driver Inattention/Distraction
  • Children (0 – 14 years)
  • Young People
  • Elderly road users
  • Pedestrians and cyclists
  • Motorcyclists
  • Freight transport by road.

Research studies on international road safety performance and practices carried out by the world’s leading countries in road safety and how they compare with Australia was the initial driving force behind the development of RoSPA.

Despite the reduction in deaths on our roads over the past 30 years, Australia’s 2020 average of 43 road deaths per 1 million residents is still significantly higher than that of the United Kingdom (28), Germany (39), Spain (39) and Ireland (33).

The approaches adopted by the best-performing countries serve as a foundation for developing a new national program for promoting road safety and working towards a future free of deaths and serious injuries on Australian roads.
