ROSPA a non-profit – seeks support from Service Clubs to print and distribute the ‘BE VISIBLE – BE VIGILANT’ A4 posters for each student in primary schools and, also to Bowls and Probus clubs for
display.
There is an urgent need to install traffic and road safety responsibility and behaviour in our young. This happens in Norway with the same population as Victoria – and half our annual road toll.
The objective being the creation of road and traffic safety awareness, and creation of responsibility by pedestrians and cyclists.
Between June 2000 and June 2005: Seven hundred and five pedestrians in rural Victoria injured and hospitalised for more than 14 days.
282 of the incidents between the hours 12.00 to 5.59pm.
One hundred and eighty-six cyclists injured and hospitalised. 80 between the hours 12.00 to 5.59pm.

The presence of retired doctors or nurses at schools and clubs during poster distribution would be extremely valuable, as they could share their firsthand experiences treating injuries and emphasize the ongoing rehabilitation and lasting physical challenges faced by many.
Support from your Club will help greatly.
Yours sincerely,

Pedestrian road trauma is of particular concern in the winter months with wet roads and restricted vision of vehicle drivers, overcast skies and pedestrians wearing heavy dark clothing.
Pedestrians aged 70 years and older have the greatest risk of injury. *
Older adults are overrepresented in pedestrian fatalities and have an increased risk of severe injury.
They are more likely to sustain fractures in a crash, and they have a longer recovery time and likelihood of long-term disability.
Most pedestrians are killed when hit by a car (68.4%), followed by heavy transport vehicles or buses (13.1%) and trains (9.2%).
Pedestrians killed or seriously injured while intoxicated are more likely to be male and in the younger age groups.
Several studies suggest that pedestrians may be distracted by mobile phones when crossing a street.

The cold wet months of July to September are dangerous for pedestrians.
Drivers of vehicles face visibility problems such as:
Oncoming Vehicles in Rain

Fogged up Windows

Slippery Roads

Wearing dark clothing during these months is not safe – wear bright coloured clothing and caps
